Welcome to the world of Maqaroon, a brand inspired by independent ladies who love all things cute and alternative! Created by Joanna Zhou, Maqaroon offers charming gifts and whimsical jewellery, all designed from scratch and 100% original.
After studying at Central St Martins and Chelsea College of Art and Design, Joanna spent many years working as an award-winning illustrator, designer and author. In 2011, she launched her own label Maqaroon, a truly unique fusion of Tokyo kawaii culture with traditional European elegance. From macaron necklaces to bow-tie chokers, every design taps into the fabulously energetic lifestyle of urban females.
Joanna is passionate about using high-quality materials that are tarnish-resistant and durable. All Maqaroon pieces are made out of 18K gold-plated stainless steel, and have the precious look of fine jewellery without the hefty price tag. Joanna's vision was to create a beautiful, unpretentious brand where people can find designer-quality gifts for themselves and their loved ones.
A selection of necklaces are always available at Étagère Designshop, .
Maqaroon is a minimalistic, luxury version of the Japanese "Sweets Deco" (food jewellery) trend. As a manga artist, I've loved this style for a long time so I decided to create a version that would appeal to European tastes. I toned down the colours and combined cute pendants with bespoke, high-end findings. Since Maqaroon is based in Austria, I also use Swarovski crystals whenever possible for a touch of local sparkle!
I always try to see the product in its final context, imagining how versatile it would look within people's existing wardrobes. Emphasis on delicate, simple designs with fine detailing ensures that each piece fits easily with any outfit or occasion! They can also be layered easily with your existing favourite pieces of jewellery.
As a consumer, I've often been disappointed by fashion jewellery that tarnished or broke after being worn just a few times. So I did a huge amount of research to find what materials would work best. A combination of careful sourcing and hand-assembling every item means I'm able to offer genuine quality at these prices. I don't have a brick & mortar shop, so my overheads are low and I can invest a lot more in product development.
Probably the best part of having my own business is that I can run it according to my personal values. I don't charge more for something than I would be prepared to pay myself and I always try to add little extras or suprises where possible. This isn't an anonymous online shop trying to sell you mass-produced imported jewellery. By shopping at Maqaroon you are helping to support an indie brand and your business is hugely valued and appreciated.
