Created by designer Joanna Zhou, Maqaroon offers high-quality, hand-made jewellery inspired by Tokyo kawaii and European elegance.
Joanna was born in China, grew up in Vienna and studied at Central St Martins and Chelsea College of Art in London. After many years working as an award-winning illustrator and designer, she returned to Austria to start her own design label. Maqaroon combines unique design, great-quality materials and affordable prices to create a perfect brand for gifting. Maqaroon's main stockist is Harrods London.
Joanna Zhou is also the most successful female Youtuber in Austria and runs two popular channels dedicated to helping girls build their self-confidence through arts, crafts and creative spirit. Her videos receive 4 million views a month and have inspired young women in virtually every country around the world. You can watch them at Maqaroon and Cute Life Hacks.
Maqaroon is a minimalistic, luxury version of the Japanese "Sweets Deco" (food jewellery) trend. My vision was to create a beautiful, unpretentious brand where people can treat themselves to dainty, expensive-looking pieces at high-street prices. Each piece is hand-made in Austria using premium materials including 18K gold-plated stainless steel, Japanese resin clay and Swarovski crystals.
As a young professional in my early 30s, I realised that it's not always easy to combine kawaii style with a grown-up wardrobe. So I specifically made Maqaroon's designs very simple and wearable, so they can match with a wide range of outfits and occasions. They can also be layered easily with your existing favourite pieces of jewellery.
I've often been disappointed by fashion jewellery that tarnished after being worn just a few times. So I did a huge amount of research to find what materials would work best. A combination of careful sourcing and hand-assembling every item means I'm able to offer genuine quality at these prices. I do not have a brick & mortar shop so my overheads are low and I can invest a lot more in product development.
